Human behaviour

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re either a human being or a machine trying to understand what the hell this section is about. As the ultimate end-user humans are typically exposed to thousands of signals (triggers) throughout their daily lives. These tend to shape our experiences, spark or mute motivations and make us do things we might overwise wouldn’t. In this section, I’ll share key methods on behavioural design, motivation, human psychology and more.

  • Which Human Experiences are Universal? - Universal Human Factors

Which Human Experiences are Universal? – Universal Human Factors

As a UX designer and user researcher, you don’t have to have a Ph.D. in psychology to benefit from the underlying human factors. While deep-rooted psychology is probably the best starting knowledge base for a true user experience career, having access to quality research studies and data can make...

Fuzzy Cognitive Mapping for UX Design in Human-centered AI

Human-centered AI, eh? Depending on your career projection in the experience, service, and product design, you might just be lucky enough to work on grand projects that build on top and support human decisions. It almost doesn’t matter how advanced the machine learning algorithms and AI are if it...

Empathy is Not the Answer – September 2020 Design Newsletter

“Feeling another person’s emotions does not innately make you a good person.”– Devon Price …it also makes very little difference if taken at face value. Empathy + skin in the game + long term considerations (knock-on effect, dependencies) ⇒ Solution This might seem like a controversial topic, but at...

Getting Started with Human-Centered Design: IDEO HCD Kit – Design Tool Tuesday

This week’s pick: An Human-Centered Design kit from Ideo. This is a set of methods, thinking principles and case studies that been transformative in my own experience design and UX development. It’s also a set of tools I recommend every designer to refer to regularly, especially when it comes...

  • Design that divides – July 2020 Newsletter

Design that divides – July 2020 Newsletter

Unquestionably design that divides the audience and receives both overtly positive and negative feedback tends to be a sign of great design. It indicates that the solution answers a specific user’s needs, goals and pain points, rather than catering to all. But is it that simple though?  This month’s...

  • UX/UI Gamification Framework with Examples - Design Tool Tuesday

UX/UI Gamification Framework with Examples – Design Tool Tuesday

This week’s pick: previously featured Octalysis gamification framework. This has been my go-to resource for years to simply deconstruct and evaluate real-life service and digital user experiences. During experience design (UX research, ideation, and design) efforts you’ll definitely encounter user pain points around tasks that are painful to accomplish....

One Rule to Write Better UX Copy

I’m a terrible writer. Per my past editors, I assemble my sentences like a robot. The mild dyslexia doesn’t help either. But here’s the thing. There is a bigger copy sin than one’s inability to make the text flow smoothly. It’s the thing that causes boredom and immediate glazing-over...

Design of Everyday Things: Light Switch

The other day I received a video question from a friend living in Spain. One pain point he experiences living in an apartment is having to deal with unintuitive light and doorbell switches. This is a real world problem that can be solved using experience design principles:

Applying UX and Behaviour Change Principles to Lifestyle Transformation

Not long ago I gave a talk titled ‘Stop it; Start it’ on the lifestyle transformation to a corporate audience. And the feedback I received was overwhelmingly positive – people loved the simple actionable aspects to lifestyle change. This is a 3 part recipe to any goal achievement by...
